AISI Standards Council Approves Formation of New Subcommittee on Composite Member Design and Seeks Experts to Participate
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Standards Council has approved the formation of a new subcommittee for composite member design and is seeking individuals to participate. The objective of “Subcommittee 34: Composite Member Design” is to develop and maintain design provisions for composite assemblies consisting of cold-formed steel members and concrete.
Membership on the subcommittee is open to individuals who may directly or materially be affected by the design provisions to be developed. The subcommittee is under the purview of AISI’s Committee on Specifications for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (COS). It will be chaired by W. Samuel Easterling, professor and head of the Charles Edward Via Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic and State University, and the Montague-Betts Professor of Structural Steel Design.
“There is a growing use for these types of composite assemblies in building construction,” said Jay Larson, P.E., F.ASCE, managing director of AISI’s Construction Technical Program. “AISI supports an open, balanced, consensus-driven process for codes and standards development. We are opening membership on this subcommittee to those currently involved in our Committee on Specifications as well as those who have never served on an AISI committee.”
Larson noted that interested individuals are requested to fill out the form located at the bottom of this document and submit it to Helen Chen (hchen@steel.org) by October 15, 2018. Selected individuals will be notified by October 30, 2018.
AISI’s Standards Council initiates cold-formed steel standards development projects and maintains accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The AISI Committee on Specifications is a consensus group whose mission is to improve the performance of cold-formed steel in structures through the development and use of improved analysis methods and design specifications. The group maintains and updates the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (AISI S100) and several other standards and test standards.
AISI’s codes and standards work is conducted under the Construction Market Council of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of AISI, which increases and defends the use of steel by developing innovative materials, applications and value-added solutions for customers in the automotive, construction and packaging markets. DEFINITIONS
MEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATION
Producer: An individual employed by or otherwise representing an organization that produces or supplies steel or manufactures cold-formed steel structural members shall be classified as a Producer. Producer members shall be further classified as follows:
- Producers or suppliers of steel.
- Manufacturers of cold-formed steel members.
User: An individual employed by or otherwise representing an organization that purchases, uses or specifies cold-formed steel structural members shall be classified as a User. This category includes, but is not limited to, design engineers, architects, representatives of government agencies that purchase or specify cold-formed steel structural members, owners, builders, fabricators, installers, distributors and wall panel fabricators.
General Interest: General Interest members are neither Producers nor Users. This category includes, but is not limited to, educators, researchers, representatives of regulatory agencies, technical societies and manufacturers or related products.
An individual in professional practice or a consultant, retained under an indefinitely continuing agreement with an organization, shall be classified in accordance with the classification of the organization retaining the individual and shall be so identified. There shall be a limit of one voting member from each company or organization.
MEMBERSHIP STATUS
Member: One who is willing and able to serve as an active member of the group, and can commit to reviewing meeting materials in advance of meetings, actively participating in meetings, reviewing research reports and other substantive materials on the subject and responding to ballots in a timely manner.
Corresponding Member: One who is very interested in the subject, would like to receive all the detailed information, may attend meetings and be able to contribute to the efforts of the group, but cannot commit to being an active member.
Guest: One who may attend meetings, but is generally satisfied to remain informed through meeting reports, which are posted to the website, and/or newsletters.
