Free Webinar on Building a Sustainable Infrastructure with Short Span Steel Bridges to be Held on May 17

The free webinar is a United for Infrastructure 2022 event 

WASHINGTON D.C. – With the release of funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, bridge owners and designers are looking for economical and sustainable solutions for their repair and replacement projects. The Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA), American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and American Galvanizers Association (AGA) will host a free one-hour webinar, “Building a Sustainable Infrastructure With Short Span Steel Bridges,” on May 17, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. EDT to discuss new research results and explore steel solutions presented by two industry experts. The potential environmental impact of bridges has become an important consideration for bridge owners and designers when selecting materials for their projects, especially for off-system, or rural, sites. Unfortunately, there is limited data available for evaluating and comparing materials. Michael Barker, Ph.D., P.E., a professor at the University of Wyoming, has just completed a research study evaluating the life cycle sustainability (cradle to grave) of the superstructures of two functionally equivalent steel and concrete rural bridges. Dr. Barker’s research reveals some compelling results, which he will discuss during the webinar.

John Krzywicki, marketing director at the American Galvanizers Association, will discuss sustainable development utilizing hot-dip galvanizing. He will provide an in-depth analysis of the sustainable aspects of hot-dip galvanizing including zinc and the environment, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), life-cycle assessment (LCA), life-cycle cost (LCC), and environmental and economic case study comparisons.

“Building a Sustainable Infrastructure With Short Span Steel Bridges” is recommended for bridge professionals, legislators and interested citizens. Advanced registration is required for this complimentary webinar through the American Galvanizers Association’s online learning system, and it is accredited by AIA and RCEP to provide 1.0 LU/PDH (HSW Hour). The webinar is being held as part of an annual event hosted by United for Infrastructure 2022. Now in its tenth year, participating organizations host events during the designated week to build awareness of and educate policymakers and citizens about the infrastructure challenges in the United States.
